By the time the estate agent visited the following morning the house had been stripped of all personal belongings and really was the blank canvas that Gray had referred to the previous day. It was no surprise that Eve had got so much done as she had been back at her former home since 6 a.m. Gray had joined her three hours later after he’d woken up alone and found she’d ‘run out’ on him like she had that first night at The Stanford, an accusation Eve had denied as she hadn’t run anywhere but had grabbed a cab after a restless and sleep deprived night thinking that it would be in everyone’s best interests to get on and keep busy.

The skip that was overflowing seemed to be the estate agent’s sole concern, a concern Eve alleviated when she explained that it would be collected the following day.

One half of the garage was filled with things to be sent to charity shops and the other half was partially filled with her personal belongings that she intended to take back to London and find a home for, either with Gray or in storage. The house was to be left furnished until it was sold and if the new buyers didn’t want it Eve had agreed to have the house cleared. She decided to put the place up for sale with both agents who had valued it thinking that she may be able to sell it sooner with two agents working on her behalf. Gray was quiet and allowed Eve to make all of the decisions herself, but had been silently supportive, they had both been fairly silent since they’d left Alec’s house the night before; Gray looked scared to speak or touch her in case he triggered another emotional outburst and Eve herself couldn’t be sure that she wouldn’t if either of them spoke about the night’s events. She was seeing the estate agent out when her phone rang with a call from the clinic.

“Hello,” she answered after allowing Gray to see the agent out.

Gray returned to her side quickly and smiled as she continued speaking to them.

“Right, so you can post them out to me, or I can come in and sign the papers in person? When can I come in, this afternoon?” She wondered if she could really go through with it. “So, tomorrow, right, no that’s fine, thank you, bye.”

“Is everything okay?” Gray pulled Eve against him for a tight hug and a kiss to her head.

“Mmm, the clinic doesn’t have anyone who deals with admin kind of things on a Sunday, so I’ll have to stay until tomorrow, or have the paperwork posted out.”

“No. Stay and get it sorted. One day won’t make much difference and Leon knew it was a possibility,” replied Gray.

Standing together in the embrace they were sharing seemed to be one of those moments where you’re frozen in time, where there’s a huge significance to the instant, even if you don’t know it.
